Hello to everyone who continues to read me, and especially to those who genuinely care about what I write here.

Perhaps it was not by chance that I came across the video I attached to this entry instead of music. Sometimes a completely random encounter, a phrase, or a melody somehow finds exactly the place where it belongs. And today I feel like writing a little about that.

I have always believed, and still do, that difficult times reveal people particularly well. Not necessarily those who do something extraordinary. Sometimes all it takes is one simple gesture, one conversation, or a few minutes spent beside someone who genuinely needs it.

Every now and then I manage to get away from work, go somewhere completely ordinary for a coffee, and for a little while feel that familiar sense of normal life. Although, to be honest, most of that peaceful time still ends up being spent talking about work. There is very little personal space left. The phone keeps bringing me back again and again: messages, calls, new questions, new tasks.

But sometimes there are people around who expect absolutely nothing from you.

The stray cats and dogs can simply walk around nearby, settle down in different places, come over, sit beside me for a while, and then leave again. Recently one of the dogs came up, stretched out a paw, and simply walked away. One of the dogs is sleeping directly under my bed right now. And there is something incredibly simple about it. No questions, no explanations. Just presence.

Perhaps that is exactly what a person sometimes needs.

There is another person in the city whom I meet from time to time. A former serviceman who was wounded many years ago. He has a lot of problems now, and from what I can see, his life has simply been left to fend for itself. His speech is often disjointed, his thoughts jumping from one subject to another. He talks about the past, about knowing how to handle weapons, about knowing how to kill, about where he has been and what he has done. Sometimes I am genuinely interested in listening to him from a technical point of view. But that is not the important part.

What matters much more is that I really want him to make it. Because in front of me is a grown, strong man who seems to be lacking something incredibly basic right now: ordinary human attention. People do not want to hire him, he has his own problems, but he still finds a way to come over, ask simply to talk, sometimes offer me a cigarette or a coffee, and spend a few minutes sitting nearby.

And I understand perfectly well why a person needs company.

Sometimes a person does not need a solution to their problems. They do not need instructions. They do not need the right words. Sometimes they simply need someone who will not step away.

Perhaps that is why I think so often about small acts of help. Because they really can change a great deal. Sometimes a few minutes of conversation are enough. Sometimes it is a cup of coffee. Sometimes it is simply the opportunity to listen to someone without looking at them as if they were just another problem to be solved.

For many nights in a row now, I have barely slept at all. Work ends only when the enemy attacks stop. And this is not simply work for the sake of work. Every day I have to make decisions that affect people's lives, and try to make sure that they remain alive and make it home.

I have enough experience by now to understand one simple thing: I am not a perfect person. I make mistakes. Sometimes I make the wrong decisions. I do not always know what the right thing to do is. Probably no one ever knows for certain.

But I am responsible for my own actions.

A few days ago I was sitting there, lost in thought, with countless thoughts about the coming night running through my head. One of the guys came over and asked me why I looked so thoughtful. Then he said something very directly: “I feel calmer when the commander is smiling. When you look like this, I get really worried.”

My mask has been cracking for a long time now. I simply do not have enough time to keep putting it back together.

It is difficult for me to see things that are perceived completely differently by people who are far away from what is happening here. Some people have the opportunity to leave, to live their lives and make use of all the possibilities the world has to offer, while others remain here and continue to carry the consequences of this war on their shoulders. I do not want to pretend that I know all the answers. But it is difficult for me to accept this kind of attitude, and even harder to understand a complete lack of interest in what is happening to the people here.

Sometimes I also think that if the world really wanted to stop this war at any cost, perhaps it would have done much more to make that happen. But what I see from where I stand often looks different. Support, politics, interests, money, weapons, economics and human lives are intertwined so tightly that sometimes it is impossible to understand where support ends and the interests of those who profit from all of this begin. The latest actions of some of the countries we consider friendly, including the decision to begin checking documents not only in relation to men's military eligibility in Ukraine, speak louder than any words. This is my personal assessment. I have the right to see what is happening this way, being here and experiencing it from the inside.

I do not want to end this entry with politics.

There was once someone I trusted completely, someone I used to tell almost everything that was happening to me. Far more than I have ever written here. I am sorry that mutual misunderstanding, the influence of everything happening around us, and my own disorientation took that away.

What I share in these entries is far from everything. A great deal will remain inside me and may perhaps never be spoken.

It has always been important to me to feel heard, at least here. And, if I am honest with myself, somewhere deep inside I still sometimes wait not so much for praise as for confirmation that I matter. That is something I never learned how to receive properly, and I am still trying to understand it, to grow up around it, and to learn how to live with it.

Everything I do, I try to do not for recognition, gratitude, or someone's approval. I do it because it genuinely matters to me, and because I simply do not know how to live any other way.

Because despite everything that is happening, small human things remain every day. The stray dog sleeping under my bed. Someone coming over simply to talk. A cup of coffee. A few minutes of silence. The opportunity to help someone.

These things are what my life is made of right now.

Today some people came to me and asked me simply to make a salad from vegetables grown at home. Or rather, to make it together, in our little plastic food containers. It was not really about the taste. It was about doing something together, knowing how much I like to cook, or perhaps how much I used to like it.

Every day I have countless thoughts that I would like to share. But something keeps getting in the way of sitting down, concentrating, and simply putting them on paper. Fatigue, work, constant tasks, attacks.

But perhaps that is exactly why I keep these entries here.

To stop for a little while. To gather my thoughts in one place.

To remind myself that behind all this work, anxiety, travelling, decisions, and endless stream of events, there is still an ordinary person who sometimes just wants to have a coffee, listen to music, talk to someone, feed his cats, feed the ones who have no home, and do at least one good thing for another person

Hello to everyone who reads me.

I will write just a few words before I retreat a little further into my own silence. During the many international trips I have made, I always carried a certain quiet pride in our Constitution. I have always thought that it is beautifully written, beginning with its preamble and continuing through the articles themselves. For some reason, one of them has been coming back to me quite often these days: “Every person has the inherent right to life. No one may be arbitrarily deprived of life. It is the duty of the state to protect human life. Everyone has the right to protect their own life and health, and the life and health of others, from unlawful encroachment.”

Freedom, to me, has always meant, among other things, the right to choose one's own path, within the boundaries that necessarily exist in society. But also the possibility of not living entirely according to other people's expectations. Not out of fear of being “wrong”, and not because of the constant need to be what someone else expects you to be.

Driving through the border regions and looking at tens, sometimes hundreds of kilometres of barbed wire, you inevitably start thinking about borders. This wire is not directed against an enemy advancing to seize land. It is turned inward. And that leaves me with more questions than answers.

At the same time, I am genuinely happy to be able to bring a watermelon from the fields to my people. To sit under the moon, on metal that is still holding the heat of a scorching day, and discuss plans over something summery. Even if the heart of the watermelon has already gone soft from the sun. Somehow, we have gradually turned our “meetings” into ordinary evenings sitting together, and perhaps there is something good in that too.

During the time I have been here, I have noticed how much the puppies have grown. Not long ago they were tiny little things, and now they are already strong young dogs. The grapevine that once grew in front of a broken window has managed to make its way inside. Quite a lot of time has passed. There is plenty I could remember, but for some reason I do not want to talk about it.

I started writing down more of the things that are actually important for the day, and somehow ended up forgetting the little ones again. Once more, I forgot to put some small but necessary things into my bag. And the cats clearly did not want me to leave at all. In protest, they managed to mark a neatly folded pile of laundry literally just before I was due to leave. Sometimes life has a very persistent way of reminding you that it has plans of its own.

I came across a picture on social media that asked, “What is your dream?” The answer was simply, “To have a dream.” For some reason, I kept thinking about it. Perhaps simply having a dream is already something valuable. The ability to want something, to wait for something, to look beyond today, is already quite a lot.

In Kyiv, during the previous night, a book market I once loved, at Petrovka, was destroyed. There is something especially absurd about that. It was mostly a place where people bought stationery, school uniforms and books, and on weekends there was a flea market. An ordinary place connected with an ordinary peaceful life. Now it is gone.

And it feels especially strange to see such places being hit on the eve of the beginning of the school year. Not a military object, not something that can be explained by military necessity, but a place connected with the most ordinary lives of ordinary people. Perhaps this is why a war of attrition is so difficult to bear. It gradually takes away not only people and buildings. It takes away the feeling that ordinary things have any protection from what is happening.

Along the road I see petrol stations that have been rebuilt and are now surrounded by protective structures again. Another completely ordinary part of life that has to be adapted to abnormal circumstances. Our ability to survive under almost any conditions is astonishing. Although the very fact that we have to survive this way is already a frightening thought.

Today, besides the dogs I already know, a new one came up to me. She quietly put her head on my knees, as if we had known each other for a long time, and simply waited to be petted. For about fifteen minutes I sat there with a completely unfamiliar animal and said nothing. They were probably some of the quietest fifteen minutes of the entire day.

In Odesa, as I learned, the fortifications around the Duke monument that had stood there since 2022 have been removed. There was something strange about that too. Many of the people who were involved in what was organised back in 2022 no longer even particularly remembered who had arranged it or how. And many people did not know when exactly those fortifications had appeared, or when they had started being dismantled.

Perhaps this is how the memory of events that still feel like part of the present gradually begins to fade. We all perceive what has been happening over these years very differently. For some, it has long since become background noise. For others, a habit. For some, it remains somewhere outside their own lives.

And for some of us, it only takes hearing too much in a single evening to reach the point where there is simply nowhere left to put any more information.

That is what happened to me this evening. At some point, I simply stopped being able to take in any more words.

Perhaps that is why I talk so much about silence.

Because sometimes the words run out.

And perhaps the best way to recover is simply to find a chance to sleep, whenever that chance happens to come.

And maybe sometimes that is one of the simplest rights a person has: to be quiet for a little while.

Recently, I came across a text about how to react when someone ignores you. There were many right things in it: don’t humiliate yourself, don’t fight for someone’s attention, accept silence as an answer. And at the end there was a phrase that somehow stayed with me: “The strong speak, the weak build walls.” It also resonates with something I remember from childhood: words are our actions.

Lately, I have become much quieter myself.

Not because I have nothing to say. Quite the opposite. I tell less and less about myself. About what is happening inside me, about how tired I am, about what I want and what I sometimes really don’t want. It is a kind of silence. Only this time, it is not someone else’s. It is my own.

I managed to spend a little time with my cats. And I am genuinely glad that I was able to make time for those who truly care about me. It becomes especially noticeable when your phone book is full of numbers, but you still don’t want to call anyone. Don’t want to write to anyone. Don’t want to explain anything.

I keep thinking more and more about simple things. For example, my next goal, besides everything else, will be to save enough money for a really good cleaning service. Just so someone could come one day and properly clean the apartment. Collect all the fur, put everything back in order. I perfectly understand that in a few days it will probably look more or less the same again. But for some reason, I want to feel cleanliness and comfort around me, even if only for a little while.

Today there was a rather telling episode at a checkpoint. I was stopped, and I didn’t feel like talking to the people standing there. Everything was loud and tense. Someone was shouting for people to keep moving, someone else was saying that all of this was illegal. At some point, I simply caught myself thinking about how absurd this whole reality has become. Everyone is playing their own role, checking one another, demanding documents, sometimes without even fully understanding what is happening.

And somehow, even that no longer brings out the reaction it once did.

Just like food.

Lately, it has almost completely lost its taste for me. I want something new, yet the city keeps opening interesting places that I never go to. I find myself listening to old music more and more. Right now, for example, there is blues playing in my car.

I think I need another period of silence.

There are fewer words. Not fewer thoughts.

I have so many roads in my life right now. I am constantly going somewhere, coming back, leaving again, finding myself in completely different places and circumstances. And more and more often I think about time. About the fact that it is the only thing that cannot be brought back with any amount of money or any opportunity.

I count the years that have already passed and think about what remains now. I value everything I managed to receive and preserve before the war. And I value even more what I have managed to preserve during it — my own life.

As long as I can, I try to do what I can for my people. To remain someone they need. To give them what they need. To be there as much as is possible. But I still cannot find peace for myself.

It feels like there is simply too much silence around me.

My previous profession was also connected with constantly being on the road. But it was a completely different kind of road. Sometimes I think I would like to return to it. And perhaps, if such an opportunity appeared now, I wouldn’t think about it for very long.

I understand something else as well: whatever helped me cope before is no longer enough. Soon, I will have to go back to doctors, review my treatment, and find another way to preserve myself. Because simply pretending that everything is fine is becoming harder and harder.

Right now, I live in two parallel universes. Even when I am somewhere relatively peaceful, part of me remains where the explosions, attacks, and constant danger to people never stop. And here, there is a war of its own.

And as selfish as it may sound, I notice more and more often that people simply don’t want to get involved in all of this. Not necessarily because they are bad people. Everyone has enough of their own problems without having to think about someone else’s as well.

That is why I notice my cats even more.

When I am not doing well, whenever they have the opportunity, they hardly leave my side. Not simply because they missed me. Sometimes I think they feel much more than they are capable of showing, and simply want to stay close, even though they don’t know how to help me.

Recently, while standing in a queue at a store, I noticed people gradually moving away. Not because I had a gun hanging visibly from me. Simply because someone looked into my eyes and saw something there that I myself had stopped noticing a long time ago.

Emptiness.

Even when I had the opportunity to go to the sea, I simply slept. I didn’t count how many hours.

I think that right now I only want one thing: to sleep, to be silent, and perhaps there is nothing weak about that either.

Sometimes a person simply needs to stop talking.

To spend a little time in silence.

And wait until they find their way back to themselves.

I want to begin by greeting everyone who continues to read me. Those who are genuinely interested in what I write, who find the time to stop for a few minutes and read my thoughts. Especially now, when sometimes it is difficult even for me to put my own thoughts into some kind of order.

Today I want to talk about what is happening here. Not because I know some single, absolute truth. No one does. People outside Ukraine perceive what is happening through the news, photographs, messages, and stories from those who have remained here. Everyone forms their own picture. But the problem is that this picture often looks nothing like the reality people here are living through.

More and more often, I see news about successes, strikes, destroyed equipment, advances and yet another set of results. That is also part of the war. But for some reason, there is less and less discussion about what is happening inside the country. About the fact that the borders have been closed to most men since 2022. About mobilization, which has continued for years. About people who are afraid to go outside. About cases of people being caught on the streets. About laws that clearly do not work equally for everyone. About corruption that has become so deeply embedded in the system that many things are still resolved not according to the law, but depending on how much money, connections and opportunities you have. The news tells us about the enemy's problems, while almost nobody does anything about our own. It is always easier to see the speck in someone else's eye without noticing the beam in your own.

I see the demonstrations taking place in the country. I hear the demands, slogans and statements. But it seems incredibly strange to me that there is so little real conversation about what is actually happening to people. Where are the demands to end the war? Where is the conversation about exhaustion? Where is the conversation about the thousands who have been killed, about those who have lost their health, their homes, their families, years of their lives? Where is the conversation about the need to find a way out of this endless circle? Instead, so much of it comes down to particular positions, political figures, yet another scandal, or a struggle over who should occupy a certain place.

I don't want to speak for everyone. I don't want to claim that every person who takes to the streets does so for exactly these reasons. Surely everyone has their own motives. But from the outside, it all seems absurd. Because a country where corruption has long become an everyday reality continues to argue over who should hold yet another position while people continue to die. The war does not end because someone has been appointed to a new position. It simply continues.

And you feel this especially strongly when you see how differently the war has become real for different people. For some, the war today exists mostly in the news. In the sound of an air-raid siren, in a message on a phone, in a few minutes of an alert. And then life goes on. You can go on vacation, have a coffee, go to the beach, make plans for next month. For someone else, that same war ends in death. And between these two realities there are enormous numbers of people who simply continue to live, work, wait, be afraid, lose things and put themselves back together again.

There is no pause here. While vacations, ordinary life and plans for the future continue somewhere else, here everything is mixed together with alerts, strikes, losses, mobilization, destruction and the constant expectation of the next day. I am not saying this to blame people who are living their lives. Sometimes I desperately want to feel that I have one too. But you cannot simultaneously pretend that everything is normal and ignore how abnormal life has become for millions of people.

That is why I find it so difficult to look at the official picture of what is happening. Because it shows only one side. The side that is convenient to show. But there is another side, where a person wakes up after yet another night attack and the first thing they do is check their phone. Where they have only a few percent of battery left because they did not let go of their phone all night. Where a blood donation center is almost empty even though blood is constantly needed. Where an elderly person counts every hryvnia. Where people simply want to go several hours without hearing a siren. And this is the side I sometimes want to leave here. Not as a journalist. Not as a politician. Just as a person who is inside all of this and sees it with his own eyes.

I am one of those people who very rarely says directly that they need something. Rather, somewhere deep inside, I may wait for the obvious to be noticed without having to ask. For someone to see that I am tired. To understand that things are difficult for me right now. To ask whether I am okay and genuinely want to hear the answer. I am not very good at talking directly about my own needs, and too often I hope that people close to me will simply sense them.

That is what is gradually teaching me not to expect from others something they may simply never notice. Because it is very difficult to maintain calm and inner balance when you are constantly under pressure, when people expect things from you, when you have to make decisions, help others and at the same time try not to fall apart yourself. Doctors have also noticed my increased nervousness, and I understand perfectly well that it is not only about me. A similar state is familiar to many people who have lived under constant pressure for too long and simply no longer know how to switch it off completely inside themselves.

After a night of enemy drone attacks, I practically did not let go of my phone. I fell asleep like that, without even putting it on charge. In the morning, there were only a few percent left. And suddenly that turned out to be almost a gift. For a while, I simply had no way to answer, read, solve things, control things or remain constantly available. Sometimes a few percent of phone battery can unexpectedly give you a few hours of your own life.

Today I finally managed to continue an old personal tradition and donate blood. I went there without a car, so for the first time in a long while I felt a little bit of ordinary city life. I took public transport, looked around, listened to people. You won't find this kind of transport in Europe. There, large buses run according to schedules, while here these old minibuses continue to move through the streets, made from metal produced by melting down scrap and memories of times that have long since passed.

The blood donation center is practically empty now. People are afraid to go there. Especially men. There are few students, and there are also very few working men who can simply come and donate blood without being afraid. Yet the need for blood does not disappear. For some reason, my blood flowed very quickly again. It seems I set some kind of small record for speed. I understand why, so I don't see it as something to be proud of. But that wasn't the important part. What mattered was that I enjoyed the feeling of living a slightly different life for a few hours. Taking the tram. Walking through a small park without a phone in my hand. Not thinking about something happening somewhere without me. Just walking. Smelling coffee and fresh pastries. Looking at people. Hearing the city. In moments like these, you suddenly understand how little a person sometimes needs to feel alive.

After donating blood, they gave me a small symbolic amount of money. They said it was what I was supposed to receive. I had never really thought about that money, but today it became useful literally a few minutes later. When I was leaving a shop, there was an elderly woman standing nearby. And I simply gave her the money. Without any additional thought. Probably because it is very difficult to look at how some people live and pretend that everything is fine. How can someone survive on such small amounts, especially during a war? And in the evening, I had the opportunity to take the car and simply drive around for a while. The window open, music playing — instrumental and blues — cool air, lights passing outside. A completely ordinary thing.

There is food, for example. Sometimes I catch myself eating something simply because I need the energy. But I want to learn to eat again simply because something tastes good. Because I want to feel the taste, the smell, the texture, remember a summer or a place. This summer I haven't managed to try as many fresh vegetables and fruits as I would have liked. Peaches, apricots and all the things that should be part of an ordinary summer. I picked a couple of apricots from a wild tree, but I never once came across them at the market.

I have written about shawarma many times. It probably sounds funny, but food really has become a small way for me to return to life. I like trying new things. Finding unusual tastes. Remembering places where something turned out to be especially delicious. Sometimes remembering not so much the food itself as the moment in which I ate it. This year I haven't bought or tried it anywhere, except for one small but very tasty piece that happened to come my way.

There was one small detail today that somehow stayed in my mind. While I was donating blood, I suggested to the people who were working with me that they take some kind of photo every day. Something that would later remind them specifically of that day. At first, they hadn't even thought about it. And yet sometimes a photograph preserves much more than we realize at the moment we take it. Perhaps that is why I love photography so much myself. Because years later, you can look at a single frame and suddenly remember not only what was in front of the lens, but also who you yourself were at that moment.

Today I simply wanted to feel life. Without a phone. Without constant connection. Without having to solve something every minute. To drive through the city. Donate blood. Walk through a park. Have a coffee. Smell fresh pastries. Give a small amount of money to someone who needed it more. Drive in the evening with the window open. Remember that summer still exists.

And all of this was happening against the background of a war that has not disappeared anywhere. It continues regardless of how far away a person is from it. It continues while some people discuss positions, others count money, others plan their vacations, and someone else at that very same moment waits for the next strike.

I don't want people outside Ukraine to see only the beautiful picture presented in the news. Victories, strikes, statements, political announcements, numbers. Behind all of this there are ordinary people. Tired. Frightened. Angry. Confused. Alive.

And I am one of them.

And sometimes I just want to remember that life still exists. Not somewhere in the future. Not after the war ends. But right now.

Even here.

Hello to everyone who reads me.

It genuinely means a lot to me to know that the thoughts and feelings I leave here resonate with someone. Maybe they inspire someone, help someone see something differently, or simply add a little color to their own day. Perhaps that is why today I want to leave an entry that is a little different. Not because anything has changed, but simply because I want to show another side of my life.

Beyond the heat, the metal around me, the dirt, the danger, and the constant tension, there is also something else that I feel through the work I do and the people it brings into my life. My phone was hot today not because of the temperature. It simply never had time to cool down because of the number of calls and messages. Every day I hear new stories from people I am responsible for. Every day I learn something new, and sometimes I am genuinely amazed by how much these people have been through and how they continue to move forward.

Over the past while I have heard so many completely different stories. Some of them carried so much pain that it was difficult to simply accept them as yet another human story. Others, on the contrary, were filled with an incredible amount of resilience. I have seen people support each other, preserve their families and their circles of friends even when life throws things at them that they themselves had not known about for years.

I have seen people who had lived with their diagnoses for decades without even knowing about them. And yet they continued to love, care for each other, build families, and stay together. That human support, that ability not to abandon one another, is somehow what stayed with me the most. Perhaps because behind all the diagnoses, problems, documents, and circumstances, there is still a human being. And sometimes that is the most important thing to see.

Despite the insane heat, feeling unwell, and nearly suffering heatstroke, the day turned out to be incredibly full. And at the end of it I still found the strength to go back into the city. Not for anything special. I simply needed to buy another bag of food for the cats. That was probably all I wanted today. I did not buy anything unnecessary. I just wanted to do something good for those who genuinely need it and who certainly do not wish me any harm.

Perhaps that is why I feel less and less inclined to think about how much dirt and negativity may be somewhere behind my back right now. There are many reasons for it. I am not a perfect person. I make mistakes. Some things, unfortunately, become public, and sometimes people see only one side of them. But almost every story has more than one perspective. There is the bright side that we notice first, and there is a darker one that can sometimes remain impossible to see until you look deeper. Perhaps that is simply how my life is too.

In my previous entry I wrote about not feeling at home. But for a long time now I have been trying to create at least small islands of normal life around myself. Sometimes they have nothing to do with work at all. Just ordinary things, small pleasures, a few minutes of attention given to another person.

And today, after the insane heat, feeling unwell, and having absolutely no desire to eat anything, I realized that people were simply waiting for me. Not to solve some problem. Not for work. They just wanted me to sit with them for a while. They waited until late at night. They waited for the moment when we could simply cut a melon the way I do it, sit together, and talk. Someone wanted to tell a story from childhood. Someone wanted to remember something that had happened quite recently. I was genuinely interested in listening.

Perhaps because I really do love listening to people. I am interested in what is inside them, what they remember, what makes them happy, what they have lost, and what can still make them smile.

I continue to talk about myself much less. Beyond work, there are many other things happening in my life that I am going through. I do not talk about many of them here either. Not because I have nothing to say. Sometimes I simply do not want to bring everything out into the open.

Today it is enough for me to know that I managed to feed the cats, feed the dogs, listen to people, and simply be there. And all of this happened at the same time as air raid alerts, threats, and other things that we have to deal with almost every day. Today there were even accusations involving possible criminal liability, although I know how unfounded they are. And still, I have to go through that too.

Today I have no beautiful words.

I am simply tired.

Perhaps people sometimes complain too much about completely ordinary things. About traffic jams because they have to sit in a car for too long. About congestion. About a hard workout. About having to go to work when they would rather stay home. About not knowing what to make for dinner in the evening.

And I do not judge them for it. Quite the opposite. Perhaps that is exactly what normal life is. Having the freedom to complain about small things that are actually just part of a peaceful existence. Perhaps the most frightening thing would be to forget one day what it felt like when your biggest problems really were things like that.

Today I realized once again how much time, strength, and energy I am capable of giving to people when I feel that it matters. But I also understand something more and more clearly. When respect is replaced by disregard, I no longer want to keep giving myself endlessly. Because for me, disrespect very quickly turns into exhaustion. And exhaustion brings irritation, anger, and the desire to simply stop. I do not want to live in that state. I need the strength to keep moving forward.

So today I simply wanted to leave a few thoughts here and share the beautiful sunset of this day.

And to say thank you to those who read me. To those who are genuinely interested in my thoughts. To those who sometimes recognize something of themselves in them. To those who simply remain here and read.

It matters to me.

Because perhaps every person sometimes needs to know that they are not simply living one day after another, but leaving some kind of trace behind. Even if it is a very small one. Even if all that remains is just a faint shadow. If someone noticed it, then perhaps I was here for a reason.

Sometimes, when everything around me is burning, I feel that the only right thing to do is to keep everyone I care about away from it. From there, either I will manage on my own, or I simply will not let anyone go down with me. When a period becomes too difficult, when you lose control and no longer fully understand what is happening around you, you stop thinking only about yourself and start thinking about how not to drag someone else down with you. Perhaps that is why I sometimes retreat into silence, even from the people I care about.

I give people a great deal. My time, my strength, my attention, my sense of responsibility, sometimes much more than anyone ever asked of me. But when I feel disrespect, I leave. Because giving yourself to a place where there is no respect eventually turns into nothing but exhaustion. For me, respect is not just a beautiful word. It gives me the strength to keep moving forward.

Sometimes a person does not need actions at all. They do not need solutions, advice, or attempts to fix something. Sometimes they simply need someone to be there. Just knowing that there is someone beside you with whom you can breathe out, sit in silence for a while, and then keep going.

Perhaps the most dangerous anger belongs to people with kind hearts. Not because they are louder than everyone else. Quite the opposite. It is because, at some point, they simply become invisible. I can give chance after chance, endure for a long time, explain, wait, and try to understand. But one day I stop arguing. Not because there is more anger inside me. Quite the opposite, something becomes completely calm. I simply stop agreeing to what causes me pain.

I have always believed that my actions speak much louder than words ever could. That is why my silence can also be an action. Sometimes a very deliberate one. Sometimes it is simply a way to stop, to avoid causing even more damage, and to choose the next step.

I want to go home. But the strangest thing is that I no longer feel at home almost anywhere. There is a place where I live. There are walls, belongings, familiar routes, familiar smells and familiar things. But the feeling of home is no longer there. That place where everything is quiet, where nothing needs to be explained, where you can simply be yourself. Perhaps at some point home really can remain somewhere in the past. And a new life has to be built from the beginning, understanding that home is no longer so much a place as it is a feeling that still has to be created somewhere inside you.

With people, perhaps everything is even simpler. People find time for those they truly want to find time for. When you matter, you are not replaced by endless excuses. No one is ever too busy for someone who is truly important to them. And when the time is not there, silence and absence eventually begin to say much more than any words could. Then trying to justify someone else's indifference is no longer hope. It is an attempt to hold on to an illusion.

I am becoming more and more convinced that when you overcome your difficulties alone, at the very moment when you most want to feel someone's hand beside you, there is simply no hand there. And perhaps, at some point, you have to accept a simple truth: if that hand was not there when you needed it most, perhaps it was never really there at all.

Sometimes I think that one of the worst ways to go through life is to be born with a kind heart, emotional intelligence, and too much naive faith in people. Real life is much more complicated. I am against dependencies, and I understand that even in the military, so much revolves around resources. As long as you have strength, knowledge, and something to give, you are needed. When your resources begin to run low, everything can change very quickly. The same thing sometimes happens with people. As long as you are interesting, useful, or convenient, people stay close. Then something changes, and suddenly you become nobody. Perhaps that is one of those unpleasant things you have to accept as you grow older.

One of my deepest hurts comes from exactly this. When you have done so much for someone, been there, invested yourself, worried, helped, and then realize that you were not seen as something valuable, but simply as something convenient. And then it becomes especially clear that kindness should never become a way of getting something in return. Not love. Not gratitude. Not recognition. Perhaps growing up means exactly this: one day, you stop trying to be good for everyone and start being honest with yourself.

Today I went to the nearest town simply to breathe out for a while and catch my breath. I sat in a café and tried not to think about anything at all for a little while. Just to feel the coolness of the ice in my tea, the sweetness of the syrup, the short moments of silence when the phone is quiet and nobody wants anything from you. Sometimes such small things become almost a luxury.

There I met my new furry friends again. Once, they simply appeared out of the bushes in front of me. Today they were already waiting for me. This time I did not come empty-handed and stopped at a shop to get them some food, as much as circumstances allowed. I like doing it precisely because I expect nothing from them. They do not have to be grateful. They do not have to give anything back. I simply know that they will come. Even if I do not call them. Even if I do not show that I am waiting. Sometimes animals sense when a person needs support much better than people do.

Perhaps that is why it is especially difficult for me to look at my own reality. A servicemember's regular pay, without additional allowances, can today be comparable to the salary of an ordinary supermarket security guard. Yet the level of responsibility, workload, risk, and constant stress are completely incomparable. That is the reality. And this is only one part of it.

I have my own financial difficulties too, although I almost never talk about them. After all these years, I still have not learned how to live within the limits of what I can afford now. You simply get used to having less every month, while prices keep rising faster than your possibilities. And at the same time, you understand that there are people around you who have it even harder. Perhaps that is why you sometimes look at your own problems in silence.

I am not writing any of this so that someone will feel sorry for me. And I am not asking anyone to come and solve my problems. I simply need to leave these thoughts here, because sometimes thoughts become too heavy when you keep carrying them inside for too long.

Perhaps I am slowly learning one simple thing: kindness does not require self-destruction, love should not mean endless endurance, and being present beside someone can sometimes matter more than a thousand perfect words. And if one day I have to choose between preserving myself and continuing to be convenient for someone else, I want to finally choose myself.

Because perhaps that is where the real journey home begins. Not to a particular place. But back to myself.

Hello to everyone who is still reading me.

I want to take this opportunity to leave a short entry while the words and thoughts seem to flow straight out of me, as if from a spring.

Over the past few days, an incredible number of things have happened. One of the hardest for me was realizing that my goal, my chance to become free, has not only moved farther away, but has become even more unattainable.

When I returned to "my people," they gathered around me like a pack, each trying to tell me about their worries and everything they had been through. My already overloaded mind could barely keep up with the flood of voices. To be honest, I spent a long time thinking about how to answer their questions, whether there was any good news at all, while trying to encourage these tired men. Morally exhausted men who, at times, remind me of grown boys playing pirates. I had no answer when they asked how I had "rested" during those few days away. I'm just glad I arrived at night. At the checkpoints, no one even asked for my documents after looking into my empty, tired eyes.

It wasn't only people who welcomed me back. The animals did too. Besides the local dogs, the cats have now joined them as well. At the same time, I keep missing my own cats, who are far away. The way they spent every minute with me, as if each moment mattered, as if it could be the last, still touches me deeply. I truly believe they understand me better than people do right now. And even if they could speak, they would never add more weight to what I already carry.

Someone asked me how I manage to cope. During the entire journey, I listened only to instrumental music. No voices, no lyrics. Somehow, the road passed much faster than usual.

Later, sitting outside with a cigarette, I looked up at the night sky and watched the falling stars. Yes, I made wishes. They were incredibly bright. In August, over the Black Sea, this happens quite often. Yet now it feels even more beautiful when the sirens are wailing, the dogs answer them in chorus, and all you can do is look into the distance.

As I was traveling, I realized that despite everything, despite all the pain, I haven't lost the desire to remain a decent human being toward others. I know many people cannot answer with the same kindness. But that doesn't make it any less valuable, because in the end it defines the kind of person I choose to remain.

I'm far from perfect. I make mistakes. I fall. I get covered in mud, stand up, and keep walking.

I've done many things. Some were right, some were wrong. But I've never acted just so I could later use my actions as an argument in a dispute. I act because, at that moment, I believe it is the right thing to do. Even if no one notices. Even if no one appreciates it. That doesn't make either the action or its result any smaller.

For a very long time I tried to be understood and heard in many different areas of life. Perhaps that's why rejection, silence, or indifference still affect me so deeply.

In many conversations I have already said and done far more than I thought I was capable of. And, understanding mathematics, I also know that any force multiplied by zero is still zero.

One day I will learn to recognize the value of my own actions without waiting for someone else to notice them. I believe that, in time, I will heal that childhood wound.

The truth is, honesty and sincerity do not always lead us where we hope they will.

There is bitterness inside me for many reasons, from deeply personal ones to those much larger than myself. It hurts to watch people gather over positions, slogans, and political games instead of demanding the one thing that truly matters: ending this war. As people once used to say, "make peace even with the devil himself" if it means people can stop dying. I wish more attention were given to ordinary people instead of endless personnel games that change almost nothing. Give people clean water in their homes. Let them stop flinching at every loud motorcycle, car, or moped. Take care of citizens instead of chasing abstract ambitions.

So I carry all these thoughts, and many others, quietly. I leave them here. Not for attention. Not for debate. Simply in a quiet place where there is no judgment.

Perhaps that is why I keep writing these entries.

Not so people will pity me. Not to convince anyone that I am right. Not even to be heard.

I write so that one day, when all of this is finally behind us, I can open these pages and remember the person I was during this time. Not the person circumstances demanded me to become, but the one I tried to remain despite everything.

Because perhaps that is the hardest victory of all. Not to become bitter. Not to lose the ability to feel compassion. Not to stop believing that kindness still has meaning, even when it doesn't return to us in the way we hoped it would.

Everything else will change one day.

But losing the person inside yourself is frighteningly easy.

Hello to everyone who still reads me.

Sometimes it feels as though these entries have become the only place where I can simply be myself. Not the person who has to make decisions, carry responsibility, solve problems, or look after others. Just a human being. Someone who gets tired. Someone who is afraid sometimes. Someone who simply wants to be heard.

The past weeks have been so full of events that it has become impossible to keep everything inside. Business trips, work, responsibility, people who need help, constant calls, messages, decisions. Sometimes it feels as if life is no longer measured in days, but in an endless chain of tasks that cannot be postponed. Perhaps that is why it has become so important for me to stop from time to time and leave at least a part of my thoughts on paper, while I am still able to truly feel them.

Ever since my previous entry, I have kept thinking about the young veteran who was almost hit by a car during an air raid alert. He never heard the horn. He never heard the driver shouting. Only afterwards did everyone realize that he was deaf and unable to speak. Somehow that brief moment has refused to leave my mind.

Perhaps because we so often look at people and notice only what is visible. We rarely stop to wonder what is happening inside them. What thoughts they carry with them. What fears they hide. What they go through every single day. More and more, I realize that I have become one of those people myself.

Most people see a calm person. They see an officer. They see someone who makes decisions, organizes work and carries responsibility. Very few ever see everything that happens beneath the surface. And perhaps they never really did.

Sometimes it saddens me to realize that the war is only part of the reason. It has simply revealed something that already existed long before it began. The real me often went unnoticed even in peaceful times. Perhaps because it is easier to hold on to an idea of a person than to truly see who they are. Illusions are usually more comfortable than reality.

The last few days reminded me of that once again. I managed to return from another business trip for a short while. Not really home. More like to the apartment that once felt like home. Now I come back mainly for my parents, for my cats, and for a few quiet hours that allow me to remember what an ordinary life once felt like.

There was only one person I truly wanted to see. Not to argue. Not to exchange endless messages. Not to look for someone to blame. Simply to have an honest conversation. Sometimes a single real conversation can heal more than hundreds of text messages ever could. Instead, everything once again ended on a screen. And I realized how easily written words destroy opportunities that might still exist in person.

I hardly met anyone else. Some people invited me to go out, have a drink, spend time together, distract myself. But I didn't want alcohol. I didn't want noisy places. I was simply exhausted. I wanted silence. I wanted to sit beside someone who wouldn't require explanations. Unfortunately, that never happened.

So once again, I found myself spending that time with my cats. They ask no questions. They give no advice. They never try to explain how I should live. They simply lie beside me. Somehow, that alone is enough to make things feel a little lighter.

People often ask me how I manage to stay calm. Honestly, I don't know the answer myself. Perhaps they only see the outside. They see someone doing his job. What they never see is what comes afterwards, when I am finally alone. When I no longer want to speak. When, for just a few minutes, I simply want my mind to become quiet.

Everyone lives in their own reality, and I stopped arguing with that a long time ago. I don't believe my pain is greater than someone else's. I don't believe my struggles are more important. Everyone carries their own losses, their own silence, their own reasons to smile. Sometimes I simply wish someone would try to understand mine as well. A reality where every morning begins not with plans, but with assessing the situation. Where my phone is never truly switched off. Where a single message may concern someone's life. Where responsibility ends only when I manage to sleep for a few hours.

I never chose this life. It is important for me to say that clearly. I do not live like this because I once dreamed of it. I never wanted to spend my days somewhere between life and death, between orders and my own conscience. I live this way because, at least for now, there is no other choice. This has simply become the way to survive.

Perhaps that is exactly what my life has become. Survival. Not the romantic version from films. Not heroism. Just an everyday attempt to preserve myself, my people, my parents, my cats, and above all, the human being who still lives somewhere inside me.

Sometimes I feel that all my life I have searched for support somewhere outside myself. I searched for understanding. I searched for someone beside whom I could finally lay down this weight, even for a little while. Yet every single time I found myself standing alone again. Not because I wanted to. Simply because life turned out that way.

And honestly, I do not need pity. I do not need grand speeches or promises. Sometimes all it takes is one person who won't look for someone to blame, who won't compare one person's pain with another's, who won't try to explain why I should feel differently. Sometimes it is enough for someone to simply stay beside you. Perhaps that has become the rarest thing of all.

I truly want to believe that one day all of this will be behind us. That one day I will be able to live again instead of merely surviving. That my phone will stop feeling like an extension of my hand. That responsibility will once again become part of my profession instead of my entire existence.

And perhaps more than anything else, I hope I can preserve the most important person until that day arrives. Not the officer. Not the professional. Not the man who is expected to cope with everything. But the boy who once sincerely believed that kindness eventually returns, that people can understand one another if they truly listen, and that a person's strength is measured not by how much they endure, but by whether they manage to remain compassionate despite everything life throws at them.

As long as I can still protect that part of myself, I know I am still moving forward. Even if, for now, my life feels far more like survival than living. I still want to believe that one day survival will become life again. And perhaps only then will I finally be able to breathe freely.

Hello to everyone who still reads me.

Sometimes it feels like these journal entries have become the only place where I can simply be myself. A place where I don't have to solve problems, make decisions, or carry responsibility for others. A place where I can honestly write about what is happening inside me.

The past weeks and months have been so full of events that it's impossible to keep them all in my head anymore. Maybe that's why it has become so important for me to stop once in a while and leave at least a part of these thoughts on paper. While they are still alive. While I can still feel them.

This evening I witnessed a scene that hasn't left my mind. During an air raid alert, a young man was walking down a dark street with his dog when a car almost hit him. The driver kept honking, then rolled down the window and started shouting. The young man calmly answered with gestures that he couldn't hear. He was deaf.

He was young, strong, and judging by his clothes, a veteran.

At that moment I realized that the war no longer exists only in reports, briefings, or at work. It walks beside us every day. On prosthetic legs. With white canes. In the eyes of people who have grown far older than their age. There are more and more of them now. This is our new reality.

A few days ago I managed to return home from another work trip. Only for a short time. During those days I wanted to do everything at once: help my parents, deal with my own problems, hug my cats, eat a proper meal, take a shower, and simply spend a few quiet hours without rushing anywhere.

Lately I've realized that my cats have become the most empathetic creatures around me. They ask no questions. They don't offer advice or explain how life should be lived. They simply come, lie beside me, purr, and somehow that alone makes everything a little easier.

These days the word empathy is everywhere. Everyone talks about it. Yet the more often I hear it, the less often I actually see it.

I've never needed pity. I don't need beautiful speeches. Sometimes it is enough if someone simply sits beside you. Sometimes silence is enough. Sometimes all it takes is a simple "How are you?" or "Take care of yourself." Such ordinary words often carry far more meaning than people realize. And perhaps that is exactly what I miss the most.

The problem is that I almost never show how exhausted I really am. Right now I don't have the luxury of appearing weak. Most people see someone who remains calm and somehow manages everything. Very few understand what that calmness actually costs, how many thoughts and responsibilities are carried inside at the same time.

Throughout my life I've had to go through many difficult moments, almost always alone. Those moments made me who I am today.

There are things I cannot talk about, even with people I trust. Not because I don't want to, but because some things must remain unspoken until they are over. Sometimes it is about safety. Sometimes about responsibility.

Even when I'm home, my thoughts stay with my people. Every air raid alert makes me wonder whether they are safe, whether everyone is still alive, whether they managed to reach shelter.

At the same time I see people drinking coffee, walking along the promenade, sitting in restaurants, swimming in the sea while the sirens continue. I don't see bravery in that. I think it is simply the terrifying ability of the human mind to adapt to what should never become normal. Perhaps that frightens me more than anything else.

The last few months have left me completely exhausted. More and more often I choose silence instead of conversations. Less and less often do I have enough strength to help others the way I used to.

Sometimes I think life would be much easier if I simply did only what was required of me. If I stopped carrying responsibility that isn't officially mine. But then I wouldn't be myself anymore. And perhaps that is exactly what keeps me moving forward.

I hear more and more people saying they no longer trust their commanders. Not because the danger has grown greater, but because trust has disappeared. Without trust, no one can keep moving for long, especially when lives depend on the decisions made every single day.

When foreigners ask me what life here is really like, I always struggle to explain it. A life where you can buy a cup of coffee, hear the air raid siren, watch air defense systems at work, wait for the all-clear, and then simply continue your day as if nothing had happened. From the outside it sounds impossible. Yet this has become our normal.

This summer is almost over, and I still haven't truly swum in the sea. It sounds insignificant, but life is built from exactly these small moments.

I have to admit something. Even when I finally had the chance, I couldn't stay in the water. A child dragged an inflatable swimming ring across the surface, and the sound instantly reminded me of bursts of machine-gun fire. Somewhere nearby another air attack was already underway. I quietly stepped out of the water.

I simply couldn't do otherwise.

Maybe that is why it has become so important for me not to lose the ability to feel. Not to become hardened. Not to stop noticing people around me. Not to lose the ability to care, to love, to empathize, and to remain human.

Because sometimes it feels as though this is what I am protecting more than anything else.

Not only my country.

Not only the people beside me.

But the person inside myself.

The one who still believes in kindness despite exhaustion. Who remains sincere despite disappointment. Who keeps helping others despite being taken for granted.

I want to preserve that person at any cost.

I truly hope that one day all of this will be behind us. That I will once again be able to stand by the sea and hear nothing but the sound of the waves. No sirens. No explosions. No memories forcing me to leave the water before I can even enjoy it.

Until then, all I can do is keep moving forward, one day at a time, and do everything I can to make sure that the human being inside me stays alive.

Hello to everyone who still reads me.

Sometimes it feels like these journal entries have become the only place where I can simply be myself. A place where I don't have to complete tasks, make decisions, or carry responsibility for others. A place where I can honestly put into words what is happening inside me.

The past months, weeks, and even days have been so full of events that describing everything would be impossible. I can only share fragments that might help paint the bigger picture. Beyond the war itself, the explosions, and the constant danger, there are countless moments people rarely talk about. Trying to save someone's life. Sometimes a person. Sometimes an animal. Sometimes simply being there because no one else is.

Not long ago, within the same day, I found myself giving painkiller injections to people, and a few hours later doing exactly the same for animals. No, I am neither a doctor nor a veterinarian. I simply did what needed to be done because, sometimes, there is no time to wait for someone else.

There were moments when saving lives meant breaking routine procedures, taking responsibility upon myself, and acting against the system. Not because I wanted to be a hero, but because I knew I would have to live with myself afterward if I did nothing.

Sometimes very wise people ask me why I continue doing all this when so many others have already learned to protect only themselves. Perhaps because if I stopped, I would no longer be myself.

I have to admit that lately I keep noticing something else. The good things I have done rarely come back in the way I once believed they would. Some people I deeply respect once told me that, sometimes, kindness returns as a burden rather than a reward. I don't know whether that is karma or simply life, but I understand those words much better now.

Recently there was another award ceremony. I put a great deal of effort into making sure other people received their medals, certificates, and words of appreciation. Then someone asked me what I had received.

I had no answer.

Because once again, the system rewarded not a person, but a mechanism. Reliable. Convenient. Still functioning.

Perhaps that is why my desire to leave this system and build my own life keeps growing stronger. I don't want to exist as a function forever. I want to become a human being again.

Free time has almost disappeared. A few hours to lie down, cook dinner, watch a film, or simply sit in silence. For the first time in many months I managed to watch an entire movie. Once, that would have been an ordinary evening. Now it feels like a small achievement. Some things I deny myself. Others have simply become impossible.

People often ask why I stay so calm. Why I rarely show emotions, almost never express doubt, and always seem confident when making decisions. Perhaps because people only see the outside. They never see how much has to remain inside.

Sometimes I wish I could take all of it off, even for a little while. Like removing a heavy body armor vest. Like taking off a uniform. Like laying down invisible armor made of responsibility. Just to be someone who owes nothing to anyone. Someone who doesn't always have to lead, decide, or remain strong.

Two months of summer have already passed, and I still haven't truly rested. At first there was no time. Later there was simply no strength left.

This summer I realized something else. I saw so much anger around me. So much pain, conflict, tension, and tragedy. Yet inside, I felt like a flower that had not been watered for a very long time.

It is a strange feeling.

Because throughout my life it has always been easier for me to care for others. Animals. Plants. People.

Sometimes I forget that I need care too.

Very often I stand by the river and look toward the opposite bank. Europe is right there. So close. Sometimes I want to believe that one day I will find freedom there again. Not a perfect life. Not a life without problems. Simply the chance to lay down this weight, like taking off a cloak, like removing armor, and remember who I was before all of this.

Perhaps what hurts me most is not even the war itself. What hurts is how easily people sometimes walk past genuine sincerity without noticing it or understanding its value. Not because they are bad people, but because not everyone has that kind of sensitivity. Real empathy is a rare gift.

Recently everything around us has become even heavier. The sea has grown more dangerous. Air attacks no longer stop, day or night. Sometimes, watching European news, it feels as though they are witnessing a completely different war. Beautiful footage. Precise strikes. Brief headlines. Yet almost nobody shows the people who continue living beneath air raid sirens every single day. Drinking coffee. Going to work. Sitting in restaurants. Swimming in the sea while missiles are already flying somewhere nearby, while air defense systems are working overhead, while fragments fall from the sky, while people die every single day. And military lives, as before, often remain little more than numbers.

I want to believe that one day all of this will end. That one day I will feel freedom again, not only physically but inside myself as well. That I will learn to rest without guilt. That I will simply live instead of constantly carrying out tasks.

Until then, I will keep moving forward. I will continue doing what I believe is right and refuse to let everything around me take away what little strength I still have. Looking back at the moments when I had to make the most important decisions in my life, I realize that I was usually alone. What I longed for was not advice, but simply someone I trusted enough to say my thoughts out loud, so that, by hearing myself speak, I could know whether I was choosing the right path.

Some very strong people once told me that kindness does not always come back the way we hope it will. Sometimes, they said, it asks something from us instead. I don't know whether that is karma or simply life. But lately I find myself understanding those words more than ever before.

Perhaps the most frightening thing for a man is to lose his purpose. Mine has become a path rather than a destination. A path without a compass. A path where life and death often stand only a few steps apart. A path that includes funerals, sleepless nights, and a hand that instinctively reaches for the phone, afraid of missing the one message that truly matters.

And still, beneath all of that, I find myself wishing for something so ordinary that it almost feels impossible. Just a little peace.

Hello to everyone who still reads me.
Sometimes it seems to me that my journal entries are gradually changing. I used to write more about stories from the past: spontaneous trips to the sea, funny adventures, unexpected encounters. Now my stories are becoming more and more like tragicomedies. And instead of looking back, I find myself wanting to talk about the simplest of wishes.
Perhaps because it is the simplest things that I miss the most right now.
Every day I feel this contrast very deeply. On the one hand, I am grateful simply to be able to sleep in my own apartment. After everything that has happened, even that has become something valuable. On the other hand, most of my life still belongs to work. While people are heading to the beach, I am dealing with documents, phone calls, preparations, and solving other people's problems. While someone spends the evening with friends or walks along the waterfront, my own way of unwinding is cooking dinner or switching my phone off for a little while.
To be honest, today I really wanted to go and listen to the street musicians.
But I was simply too exhausted. So even that wish remained only a wish.
Perhaps what I miss even more is not the walks themselves. What I really miss is something much simpler.
Another person's presence. Someone who doesn't need an explanation for your silence.
Someone you can simply sit in a car with, roll down the windows, turn on some music, and drive through the evening city without any destination. Stop to buy discounted ice cream, park by the sea, or simply listen to your favorite songs together without saying a word.
Perhaps these are the moments I miss the most. For now, though, life looks different.
The phone calls continue until late in the evening. Messages. Documents. Work. Helping people. Lately there has simply been too much of everything: searching for blood donors, funerals, cemeteries, other people's stories that somehow become part of my own life.
And sometimes it feels as though there is almost no time left to help myself. That is why it is easier for me to share these thoughts here.
Life has gradually taught me to be cautious. It has become harder and harder for me to open up to people I barely know. Not because they are bad people. I simply find myself seeing the world differently more and more often. And eventually I stopped fighting that.
As long as I still have my cats, the chance to cook something in my own kitchen, and a few quiet hours in the evening, I try to appreciate those things.
Maybe one day I will once again have the chance to pick up a book and spend several uninterrupted hours reading it without being distracted by my phone.
Not long ago I got an old bicycle. It is probably almost as retro as I am. Maybe even older. It's funny, but for now it simply stands there, waiting for its time. I still haven't found either the energy or a free evening to finally take it for a ride. I really want to believe that one day that moment will come.
Sometimes I stop by second-hand stores. I buy clothes that I may never even have the chance to wear. A few toys. Things that are completely unnecessary. Perhaps this is my own small way of reminding myself that life is made of more than duties and responsibilities.
It is especially strange to watch how differently life looks around me now. It feels as though my city has been given a chance to breathe for a little while. People are walking again, relaxing, making plans, reacting less and less to the sound of air raid alerts. But the war hasn't disappeared. Sometimes people simply want to believe that the danger has passed. Perhaps that is just how we are. And I am still learning how to live alongside this new reality.
Learning to remain myself.
Learning not to let everything that is happening take away my ability to notice the simple things that make me feel alive. Sometimes I feel as though I am missing some kind of support. As if there were someone's hand I could hold onto for just a moment. Not so that someone could lead me. Just so I could straighten my back once again, take a deep breath, and then continue walking on my own. Perhaps that is exactly the difference. As I get older, I understand more and more that, in the end, the only person I can truly rely on is myself. And perhaps growing up, for me now, is exactly about this: learning to stand on my own not because I want to, but because life leaves no other choice.
I suppose I still have a kind of course in socialization ahead of me.
Over the past few years I have become so used to living in a different rhythm that sometimes it is difficult even to start a conversation with someone. And yet I often catch myself genuinely enjoying talking to people. Even if it is only a few minutes with the man selling cigarettes, the woman selling vegetables at the market, or a stranger whose eyes happen to meet mine.
Sometimes it feels as though I simply miss ordinary human connection. Not something superficial. Something genuine. Something real. There are not many bright stories in my life right now that I feel ready to tell. And the ones that do exist are still too heavy to let out into the world. Perhaps one day their time will come. But certainly not now.
There was a time when I loved making plans years ahead. imagined where I would end up, what I would be doing, what my future would look like. Now everything has changed.
I have almost stopped living in the future. Instead, I find myself trying to make today special. To remember it. To find something in it to be grateful for. Because it is exactly from days like these, the ordinary ones, that life is built. Not from great victories. But from quiet evenings. Unexpected conversations. Good music. The road home. A hot / cold cup of coffee.
The warmth of my cats.
And the feeling that today, despite everything, I managed to remain myself.
And perhaps that is what matters most right now.
Not to lose myself completely.
Because everything else will eventually change

I’ve missed writing here — and missed being able to read you, my dear ones.
Time is scarce, but it matters that I’m moving toward having at least a little space for myself in this daily routine.

After returning from my last deployment, I managed to get a short sick leave — five days — though it didn’t really help. The root, as always, lies in nerves.

I’m writing this from a new assignment. Right now, text is my way to release the built-up tension, to let the negative spill out.
I had plans for autumn — its quiet beauty, a trip to nearby towns, meeting my sister. All that was before this evening.

My lawyer told me my father was in a car accident — he was following the ambulance that carried my mother.
In a moment, the world flipped over. Work stopped mattering — I’m far from home and can’t return for another week and a half.

Maybe this entry won’t be what I wanted. Thoughts tangled, the usual topics — autumn, politics, people — blurred away.

I’ll share something from one project, the one I’ve poured time and soul into. The partners team followed many of my recommendations — I saw how materials and details came alive, moved from text to reality. It looks impressive, especially given the scale and purpose of these designs.

But there’s another side. In Ukraine, few know about it, and even fewer want to.
The military machine — and most people inside it — couldn’t care less about individuals. All that matters is results, reports, what gets passed up the chain.
I still believe humanity should come first. But that belief costs battles.
Dirty work is handed to people like me, so that later the “right ones” can show up, collect the glory and awards.
I’ve seen this many times. And now I know for sure — even in a new unit, nothing changes. You’re valuable only while they can use you… and afterward, they throw you away.

I want to share a photo of an autumn street musician in Odesa — taken just before a three-day blackout.
I don’t have much energy left to write — everything goes against the flow. For now, I’m wrapping up things with people, the car, the hospital.
Hope to write again soon.

Good day, dear readers. Please accept my apologies for the long break and my low activity here.

The calendar says autumn has arrived, but in my heart, it still feels like the fortieth of August. Many plans I had for this summer, unfortunately, didn’t come true — mostly due to a lack of time and energy.

Autumn remains my favorite season. Despite the war and ongoing hostilities, I still want to capture beautiful moments through my lens. As before, I avoid photographing destruction — it’s enough to see it with my own eyes to remember, without multiplying the pain.

One of the moments I most wish to make real is to meet the sunrise accompanied by a piano in Odesa. This is only possible if I have the strength and inspiration, but even the thought of it is comforting.

Soon it will be a month since I took on a new position, learning something completely different. During this time, I traveled across all of Ukraine and back, once again seeing a reality far removed from the polished videos on YouTube. The landscapes were plain: deserted villages even far from the front, emptied because their people had left.

About the service, I’ll say briefly: you can’t truly understand it by watching videos, reading articles, or looking at photos. Life on the ground is completely different. The pomp and big words remain in large headquarters, while on the front lines it’s all about simple human relationships, where support and honesty matter most.

I never planned a military career — things just happen as they do. It’s hard to plan a normal life when there isn’t even a hint of the war’s end. Yet, strangely, this uncertainty teaches you to live in the present, to notice the small things, and to hold on to every glimpse of beauty.

Autumn is a time of soft light and long shadows. Perhaps it will remind us that even after the longest storms, a season of gathering and hope arrives. I want to believe that one day, when we wake up, we will hear not alarms but the music of dawn.

I barely have time to read the news, but I know the world is quietly heating up for new conflicts. Words have lost their power, and the world is divided by those backed by the largest armies and the most advanced technologies.

With the arrival of autumn, one interesting story came to mind. I’ll write it when I can, during a business trip. It’s a story from ordinary life — without wars or anything of that kind.

Let me add a little about people’s moods: I’ve been in places where people are drafted and trained for the army, and I’ve seen firsthand what isn’t shown anywhere else — real faces, the real picture of what’s happening. People don’t want to serve, even if it’s near home or not directly tied to combat. The overwhelming majority feels this way. Any limited freedom is still better than complete lack of freedom.

I also noticed there are fewer tourists now, even though the season in the city continues, and once again there are cadets in naval uniforms on the streets. If you didn’t know about the air raid alerts and the shelling of other cities, you could almost believe in ordinary life again.

I want to return to the world of diaries as soon as possible — to read your entries and write my own. Perhaps, like in Midnight in Paris, without war.

Good day to all my readers!
Today I want to tell you about another legendary place in Odessa — the flea market at Starokonny Bazaar. It’s a real time machine that every Saturday and Sunday carries us back into the past.

From early morning, the Moldavanka district comes alive: people come out of their courtyards with suitcases, bundles, and boxes, laying out their “treasures” right on the sidewalks for future buyers to browse. This tradition has been going on for more than a hundred years. Starokonka is not just a market — it’s an open-air museum where objects outlive their owners, and every walk becomes a small journey through time.

The market also has its own legends.
They say that if something gets stolen in Odessa — you should look for it at Starokonka. A watch, a samovar, a portrait of your great-grandfather — sooner or later it all ended up here. Of course, to get it back you had to pay again. There’s a certain Odessan fairness in that: the thief stole, the market resold, you bought it back — and the circle closed.

Another story is about a violin. A poor musician once bought a shabby instrument here for a few kopecks, and when a master examined it, he nearly fainted: it turned out to be a rare Italian work, almost a Stradivarius. Whether it’s true or just a beautiful tale — no one can check anymore, but the story lives on, passed from mouth to mouth.

Odessans like to joke:
— “At Starokonka you can buy not only old junk, but also things from the future. Buy a radio set — and it will break even before it’s invented.”

And the most precise phrase about the market:
— “If it doesn’t exist at Starokonka — then it doesn’t exist at all.”

Here you can really find everything: from tsarist coins and revolutionary leaflets to Soviet record players and the first computers.

But Starokonka is not only about things. There’s also the animal market. I only filmed a general shot — in the heat it’s too sad to watch animals sitting in cages or car trunks, waiting for new owners.

And of course, fresh jokes are born right here on Moldavanka. In Odessa they now say: “A room is for rent in a house on the non-shahed side.” This too is part of local humor — funny and bitter at the same time.

At Starokonka you can also hear the latest city news — not only about the war, but also the most ordinary, human ones. People argue, bargain, gossip about neighbors and politics — and that’s the whole Odessan flavor. Life doesn’t stop.

In my own life, things have changed in recent weeks. I stopped reading the news: my new place of service has consumed me, kept me busy, and given me less time to get distracted by emptiness. Still, I can say this: there are no real signs of peace yet. Neither those making decisions overseas, nor the enemy — whose military industry runs at full capacity — are ready for it. For them, the war hasn’t played all its cards yet. Whatever loud words may sound at leaders’ meetings — it’s all just stages, with several more rounds still ahead.

On top of that, I’ve fallen ill. Judging by the symptoms, it’s the new virus that the media are writing about. Society is being “warmed up” — maybe prepared for another cataclysm, so that the world shifts its attention and doesn’t notice the postwar reality. The illness isn’t pleasant. Back during COVID I was vaccinated in California, later kept up with boosters of the same vaccine. That probably helps a little now, though it doesn’t make things much easier.

And yet, despite fatigue, viruses, war, and false news — life goes on. Somewhere on Moldavanka, people are haggling over the price of an old book, at Starokonka someone is selling another person’s history, children are releasing pigeons from cages, and someone else is just looking for a random button. Autumn is already at the doorstep, and I want to wish all of us to catch a little more summer, warmth, and living present. Because it’s the only thing that isn’t for sale — not even at Starokonka.

In a rare moment of quiet, I wanted to leave a short note in a bottle — not from the past, but from the present.

Summer has reached its peak. Temperatures are breaking records, and this is only the beginning. August and September might be even hotter — it really feels like the seasons have shifted, doesn’t it?
Not long ago, apricot trees were blooming — I was walking through snow in a coat and hat. Now those same trees are heavy with fruit. The past month flew by in a blink.

Aside from the exhausting heat, one thought won’t leave me:
Many have forgotten that the enemy is beyond the front line — not among our own.
Time has blurred the line.
Especially for those who never saw the enemy up close.
Among soldiers, it’s become a form of self-expression — and to me, it looks pitiful.
Since 2022, so much has lost its value — medals, titles, ranks, positions… all of it seems empty now.

Can anyone clearly say what Ukraine is fighting for today?
At first, we heard — borders, sovereignty. But that’s long gone.
Now what? What are we fighting for, besides simply keeping the enemy out?
A wall of living shields. And then what? Wait for Putin to die?

In a previous post, I mentioned a golf club being built. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
There are entertainment centers, swimming pools, luxury homes in the mountains and by the sea.
But where are the homes for people who need to evacuate from the front line?

Why do drones hit our cities at night, sounding like scooters, while during the day sports bikes and roaring cars tear through the streets — and no one cares?

This isn’t one thought — it’s a flow. And it can’t be stopped.
Like the rising prices for basic food and utilities — which they promised not to raise.

Recently I saw humanitarian aid from Israel: baby food, medicine, diapers, supplies.
And in Gaza? There’s hunger. Eastern countries — Turkey, Afghanistan — try to help with water, rice, anything.
Because it really is a catastrophe.
And the world stays silent.
Just like it does about our war.

Our own government, along with our enemy, pushes people toward this collapse — economically, mentally, physically.
Real public opinion is nowhere to be found — except buried in thousands of news comment sections.
Imported goods are cheaper than local ones. Even fruits and vegetables.
Is that not absurd?

I chose a new path. Soon I’ll have to pass a medical exam. For three years, I didn’t need doctors — but now, to make this transition, I have to be healthy.
They’ve already found issues I didn’t know about.
But first — the results. A new team. A new beginning.
Maybe it’s like switching schools. The people are the same — but I’ve changed.
I want to protect myself. To remain human in this theater of absurdity.

If everything works out — there will be more work, more responsibility. Maybe travel.
Maybe even a chance to achieve something meaningful.
And to remember what the sea feels like — for real.

When I spoke to my coach, he asked:
"Is this dangerous? Is your life at risk?"
I hesitated then.
Now I understand — risk isn’t linear, it’s dynamic.
And that too… is emotion.

I’m truly grateful to everyone who leaves comments.
I love reading and replying.
I visit the journals I’m subscribed to — but I’m short on time these days.
Often I just check my email for new notifications.
I wish I could spend more time here.
Thank you all.

Dear readers, I want to apologize for not commenting on your posts lately. I really try to make time for it, and at the same time I’ve been practicing English. I even started writing down some memorable phrases! Each of you has your own unique style — something no textbook can teach. Only through this kind of real connection can those small pieces of real language be absorbed.

Thank you so much to everyone who responded to my last post. Your comments, support, and thoughts mean a lot to me. I read every message carefully, even if I don’t always reply right away.

I’ve decided to change my field of work within the system I’m part of. It’s a step into the unknown, and right now I’m just waiting to see how things unfold. Medication has helped me a lot during this time. Its effect is slow and builds up over time, and I really hope to feel its full impact eventually.

Talking about politics makes me feel sick. Since my last posts, nothing has really changed — except I’ve started reading the news way less. If the war ends, I’ll hear about it. What’s happening now feels more like a long, absurd play — or a never-ending chess game.

Let me give you one absurd example: the country is at war, the army is always short on everything — it's huge, after all — and yet I see a new golf club being built in the city. New bike lanes and paid parking spaces keep popping up, and the beach season just started — tourists are flooding in. All this during “war.” I use quotes for a reason. Maybe I missed some lessons from history, but during WWII in Britain they were collecting frying pans for the army.

Prices for basic needs are out of control, despite all the promises. This war is for the poor — and about the poor. The class divide is painfully obvious now. Corruption is on a massive scale. Everything is for sale — literally. Our enemy made sure their people joined the army for money. Our government decided to copy them — but people don’t want to go. Because it’s not worth it, no matter the money.

Some of my friends volunteer in Gaza — they show what’s really happening, without filters. Hunger, poverty, no laws. Volunteers are the only ones helping people survive there. And the world stays silent — just like it did with Ukraine. Everyone has their own interests. Stopping the war just isn’t profitable for many. War is a machine. It fuels industries. Like it did for the U.S. during WWII. I’m not comparing — just stating the pattern.

Besides work, I’ve also been focused on helping one of my employees find a new home for his cat — since she was sterilized, she can’t live with the others anymore. That’s a priority for me right now. And also — finding a quiet day near the sea, far from all the noise and stress. Just to feel human again.

There’s a lot of work and travel ahead. New responsibilities. This step into the unknown means both learning and hard work — and also inner work. So I don’t become the kind of person the system wants to turn me into.

And finally — a track. And my hope that change will bring something new.

A powerful first-person story of volunteer resistance in Odesa during the first days of the full-scale invasion — where ordinary people became a single living organism, filling sandbags, singing in the rain under air raids, and holding the city together with bare hands and open hearts.
“They covered the city like angels with wings.”

Bon Jovi — It's My Life, — это происходило именно там.

I want to share a story from early 2022 — a story of strength, unity, and spirit. It’s the kind of story that deserves a book, while the memories are still alive.

In the first days of the full-scale invasion, something remarkable appeared in Odesa — “The Sandbox.” People from all over the city came to the beaches to fill sandbags. These bags were used to reinforce checkpoints and protect basements from shrapnel. In the chaos of those days, no one knew where to go or what to do. Military offices were overwhelmed, humanitarian aid poured in from across the world, but there weren’t enough hands to unload it. Waves of refugees rolled into the city as locals fled in fear. Tomorrow was a mystery.

I heard about the Sandbox on social media — no address, just a call. One day, when I had no plans to help with aid delivery, I decided to try it out. I remember the overcast sky, rain mixed with snow. I grabbed a pack of gloves, dressed in ski gear, and headed toward the sea. Back then, access to the beach was still open — I drove down the Health Trail. People in similar clothes were walking in the same direction, showing me the way.

Hundreds were already working on the beach. Some with shovels, others with excavators, filling sandbags. Some tied them and passed them along a human chain. It felt like a living organism. On the side, women offered hot masala tea, coffee, cookies.

There were all kinds of people: actors, singers, scientists, athletes, students, businesspeople, parents with children. Even kids helped tie the bags. Tired volunteers left, and new ones arrived — there was enough work for everyone.

Trucks, vans, and even cars with trailers came one after another. People delivered the sandbags to checkpoints in whatever vehicles they had. Despite the rain and snow, vehicles were loaded to the top. During short breaks, we sang — especially when opera singers were with us. I remember one tall guy in a leather biker jacket with long hair and a powerful voice — he lifted everyone's spirits.

After noon, a van arrived with lunch. Honestly, I hadn’t been that happy about a hot meal in the open air in a long time. There was enough food for all. The work didn’t stop — everything moved in shifts. The vehicles just kept coming.

You might think this was all organized by the military or the city? No.
It was all led by a 22-year-old girl. From day one, two main coordinators handled requests from military units and local authorities. They had helpers, but the core of the coordination rested on them.

We didn’t feel tired. Time flew. At that time, enemy ships still loomed on the horizon, artillery shelled the coastline, and enemy aircraft approached the city, dropping bombs and missiles. But the work never stopped. Only songs and the national anthem could momentarily pause the human chain.

One moment I’ll never forget — we were standing knee-deep in sand and water when two enemy bombers began striking nearby. The air raid sirens wailed, explosions echoed, and people kept singing the anthem.

Three years ago, I dreamed of writing about every day spent in the Sandbox — new faces, new stories, smiles through tears, and an endless stream of vehicles. Later, I ended up at the draft office. They told me to wait. So I waited — and kept doing what I was doing. Eventually, I joined nighttime city patrols. But that’s another story.

To me, the story of the Sandbox is still unfinished. As Borys Barsky said, “These people covered Odesa with sandbags like angels with wings.”
If you’ve ever seen people load sandbags to the sound of Bon Jovi’s It’s My Life — that was us.

By the way, I brought the guy with the drums. Pure coincidence. The idea came up on the fly — to boost morale. And, honestly, it ended up being great promo for his drum school.

Later, that same 22-year-old girl founded a charitable foundation. I called her the Queen of the Sandbox. She wasn’t alone — there was a team. But she was the heart, the energy, the anchor of it all.

All that unity, mutual aid, and support — it faded somewhere into the past. The enemy never expected such a powerful national awakening. That’s why they stumbled at the gate.

Those days are behind us. Just clips online now. And fragmented memories.
But inside me, this story still lives.
I leave it here — as a part of myself.

Note translated in assistance with AI
About fifteen years ago, I made a friend who, at the time, seemed like a true one. We met through my school friend at some event and quickly became close. Soon I found out that our universities stood right across from each other — just thirty meters apart. Those were the early university years, a time when I was just starting to discover the big city.

We used to go on long "expeditions" — lengthy walks. Sometimes we rode bikes, sometimes took his Labrador with us, and often did sports together. From the outside, we looked like young Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe. I felt his support and strength — it seemed like he was my soul mate.

Everything went that way until I fell in love. I met a girl through a journaling platform; it all felt like a fairy tale, and I described every emotion in vivid detail. To visit her, I had to save up money while also studying in two universities. She lived thousands of kilometers away, in another country.

Just a couple of weeks before my trip, my "friend" told me he also wanted to visit her — and she didn’t mind. That was a shock. I still managed to make the trip (despite everyone trying to talk me out of it), gained my experience, broke my heart… and lost a friend.

Later, I found out that he never went to see her. That’s when I realized the gap between us — financial, mainly — “a prince and a pauper,” as he liked to call himself, “the Prince of Persia.” One of those cases where someone turns out to be neither a friend, nor an enemy — just someone passing by.

Photos from our walks are still on my laptop.

Why do I remember it now?
Back then I needed friendship — and got a lesson instead: people reveal themselves in critical moments.

Since 2022, this pattern has scaled up. In the first weeks, we were storming draft offices, and there were more volunteers than supplies. But over time, the war revealed people’s true nature. Unity dissolved: for some, war is survival; for others, a business. Everyone has their own goals…

I felt something similar again. My efforts in service — aimed at strengthening and development — were not appreciated. Jealousy crushed initiative, and I was “sent away.” The so-called heroes stayed heroes only in words, decorating themselves with symbols and “loving their country” only verbally.

The same happens in politics. Are our “partners” truly friends? A real friend doesn’t seek personal gain. There are lots of pompous words — but very few decisions. I don’t see peace coming soon, nor do I see reconciliation within the country. The contest of “who helped more” only intensifies, while the war continues.

There’s a battle inside me too: about how these years have passed, and what I should do to live to see the end — knowing that I can rely only on myself.

Maybe the main thing I’ve learned is not to expect more from people than they can give. True closeness isn’t in words, but in actions. I didn’t become bitter — just more careful. It’s not resentment — it’s experience.
And still… despite it all, I haven’t forgotten how to believe. There are people who remain genuine. They are few, but they shine like lights in the fog. It’s for them that the road is worth continuing.
On this minor note I’ll stop. Artillery fire has replaced music — but I’ll still leave this melody:
